URL short links with a tracking code are beneficial for campaign managers who do not know how many contacts clicked on the link they sent.
With this feature, you can gather information about the number of contacts that clicked on the link, the number of contacts that converted, the number of unique clicks, the time and date when the contact clicked the link.
This helps measure the success or conversion rate of your campaign with the help of Click-Through tracking reports.
Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Click-Through Rate is the number of times when a contact opened a link to the total number of contacts the link was sent in a campaign.
Click-through rate can help a campaign manager run a follow-up campaign for people who clicked the link, remove people from the campaign or do both based on their campaign requirements.
Click-Through Tracking (CTT) or Contact tracking
Click-Through tracking is a technique used to analyze how many contacts visited the link you sent through your campaigns. Every time a user clicks onto a link, the action is logged as a click count, and the campaign manager can track the number of clicks he received for a specific link.
Tracking links look like regular links with alphanumeric characters at the end of the link. For example, www.callhub.io/about is a regular link. Adding a tracking code in the link looks like www.callhub.io/about/abc123. The "/abc123" in the link is the tracking code.
Contact tracking on CallHub campaigns
Contact tracking can be enabled while setting up a Short URL for the campaigns. You need to enable the slider for "Contact tracking" during the URL setup.
By clicking on "Personalize," you can add Merge fields to the links you send to the contacts. You can send a personalized link to every contact to track their clicks. E.g., If you want to add a mobile number as a Merge tag to the URL, you need to choose the tag {mobile_number} with the Parameter labeled as Mobile_Number. Then, click on "Add Merge fields" to proceed.
To verify the placeholders for the personalized link, you can visit the sample URL and navigate to the form. Here, you need to choose the Inspect element option from your browser. The email of the contact corresponds to the Email Address, and the first name of the contact corresponds to the First Name.
If “data-name” is not present, check for “name”. If the name is not available, check for "id".
The shortened URL with contact tracking includes a short URL and a custom back-half that can be set up based on your requirements. In the example image below, you can set up a customized back half. I have added "Pricing" to indicate the link is a pricing-related link. The 5-6 digit code at the end of the URL is the tracking code.
Note: The above-shortened URL is only for illustration purposes. A unique link will be assigned to each contact in the Contact list. Only the last characters after the slash (/) in these URLs will be modified.
Moving forward, you need to confirm the finalized short URL with the tracking code to add it to the campaign. Click "Confirm" to proceed.
Note: You cannot change the URL settings once you have clicked on "Confirm" and the URL is added to the campaign script.
Post this, you may complete the remaining steps in the campaign and click on START to start the campaign and send the messages to your contacts. Click on the link to know more about how to generate reports for the Contact tracking links.
